My First Podcast Event! Insights and Observations Inspired By Podcamp Toronto 2025 | The Secrets of a Witch Podcast with Sabrina Scott episode 199

I had a great time at my first ever podcasting conference and event: Podcamp Toronto! In this episode, I share a bit about what I learned, and share thoughts on some conversations/themes present in the podcasting space, including corporate vs DIY, YouTube and video-based podcasts, how people self-sabotage by never starting (and always leaving it til later), why I love chatting with strangers in hallways (and am always pleasantly surprised by who they turn out to be), and where some of the big knowledge can be found at these events. Should I apply next year to speak? What do you guys think? Did I leave anything out that you'd like me to address? Let me know!

Are Podcast Interviewers Grifting? Don't Skip the Hard Work of Building Your Own Voice (Podcamp 2025 Reflections!) | The Secrets of a Witch Podcast with Sabrina Scott episode 197

In this era of everyone and their grandpa (and dog) having a podcast, I have to wonder: Are all these newbie interviewers just pulling off really skillful grifts? Step 1: Interview famous people. Step 2: Profit! Spicy hot takes aside, in this episode I talk about how the journey is the destination, and how crucial (and unavoidable) it is for us to really put in the hours and do the work of developing and advancing our thought processes, analytical skills, rhetorical skills, and skills in the creative industries/spaces of our choice. I talk about how this is something that I've observed in pretty much every creative space I've ever spent time in - it's not unique to the podcast space whatsoever, though much of what I say here is inspired by some of what I heard at Podcamp Toronto this past weekend! As one presenter said at the conference: You are not owed an audience. What value do you bring? Tune in for a super interesting discussion of these themes.

Feeling Left Out? Be the Change! Create What You Wish Existed | The Secrets of a Witch Podcast with Sabrina Scott episode 25

Have you ever been left out? Not invited to the kewl kids’ party (or podcast, or book anthology thang, or conference, or or or)? Well, tbh, same - witchy and spiritual communities can be just as cliquey and rude as any other ol’ group of people. In this episode, I share the only ritual I ever did that completely was rejected by the universe (to find a ready-made spiritual community to plop happily right into), how I felt about it, lessons from it, and what I did next. I also give suggestions on what to do if you feel totally shunned by all the places you wanna be, or like you don’t belong. You got this - I promise.

Is All Spirituality a Cult? What Critics Get Wrong | The Secrets of a Witch Podcast with Sabrina Scott episode 17

In the last few years, as we’ve seen the rise of anti-science stances among adherents of alternative spirituality, there’s also been an increase of critiques of things like reiki, witchcraft, and everything new age woo as being conspiracy theories or cults. In this episode I argue that many of the current critiques of contemporary fringe spirituality are fuelled by cynicism and contempt, and incorrectly lump everything into the ‘conspiracy’ category, often displaying as much paranoia as those they claim to critique - a hilarious and yet sad hypocrisy. I discuss what I believe led us here, including the death of expertise, lack of discernment, and perhaps the disillusionment of today’s critics.
